NPTE Exam Guide: The Physical Therapy Licensing Exam, Explained

This guide explains the NPTE as FSBPT publishes it — its structure, its scoring, and its content outline — and how the PassProfessor program maps onto each part.

Format and scoring

The NPTE presents 225 multiple-choice questions in five sections of 45, with five hours of testing time. Of those, 180 are scored and 45 are unscored pretest questions mixed in indistinguishably. Results are reported as a scaled score from 200 to 800, and the passing standard is a scaled score of 600. A scaled standard cannot be converted into a percentage of questions answered correctly — which is why this program scores practice against a 70% benchmark and labels it as a benchmark.

Content breakdown

Every content category on FSBPT’s outline is covered at its published weight. The bank’s category counts, and what a full practice exam draws from each:

  • Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Systems — 274 practice questions; 25 per full practice exam
  • Musculoskeletal System — 548 practice questions; 49 per full practice exam
  • Neuromuscular & Nervous Systems — 486 practice questions; 44 per full practice exam
  • Integumentary System — 106 practice questions; 10 per full practice exam
  • Metabolic & Endocrine Systems — 56 practice questions; 5 per full practice exam
  • Gastrointestinal System — 50 practice questions; 5 per full practice exam
  • Genitourinary System — 39 practice questions; 4 per full practice exam
  • Lymphatic System — 61 practice questions; 5 per full practice exam
  • System Interactions — 101 practice questions; 9 per full practice exam
  • Equipment, Devices, & Technologies — 61 practice questions; 5 per full practice exam
  • Therapeutic Modalities — 56 practice questions; 5 per full practice exam
  • Safety & Protection — 67 practice questions; 6 per full practice exam
  • Professional Responsibilities — 50 practice questions; 4 per full practice exam
  • Research & Evidence-Based Practice — 45 practice questions; 4 per full practice exam

How to prepare with this program

A full practice exam draws 180 scored questions — the scored length of the real exam — across all 14 content categories at their outline weights, inside a 300-minute limit that mirrors the real five-hour clock. Practice exams are scored against a 70% practice benchmark: the real NPTE reports a scaled score from 200 to 800 with a passing standard of 600, which has no percentage equivalent, so treat the benchmark as a practice target, not the FSBPT standard.

Work the section drills first to find weak areas, then take full timed practice exams as your date approaches. Because every attempt draws a fresh set from the full 2,000-question bank, your scores track what you know rather than what you have memorized.

Verified questions

Every question in this program is original — written for PassProfessor from the official exam blueprint, never copied from a test bank or another provider’s materials. Before enrollment opened, each answer key was independently verified: reviewers re-answered sampled questions blind, disagreements were settled against the primary sources, and every numeric answer was recomputed from first principles. Questions whose facts could not be confirmed were removed, and the bank passed a text-overlap screen. Practice exams draw a fresh, blueprint-weighted set from the full bank on every attempt, so no two practice exams are the same.
