Iowa does not offer a combined property and casualty exam. It licenses P&C producers through two separate Pearson VUE exams — the Property exam (12-IA-03: 81 scored questions, 2 hours) and the Casualty exam (12-IA-04: 83 scored questions, 2 hours) — and you must pass each one on its own. PassProfessor’s Iowa program will be a single practice program that prepares you for both: 10,006 original practice questions built on Pearson VUE’s current Iowa content outlines — including 2,512 questions on Iowa law alone — with an explanation on every question, practice exams you can generate for the Property exam, the Casualty exam, or both together, and a free sample to start. The full Iowa program will be $29 when enrollment opens.

What’s included

One practice program for two real exams — stated plainly. Iowa runs two sittings, two score reports, and two pass/fail decisions. This program does not change that, and it does not pretend Iowa offers a combined exam. What it does is cover both exams’ content in one bank, so you study once, drill each exam’s outline separately, and sit generated practice exams matched to the Property blueprint, the Casualty blueprint, or a combined run when you want the full endurance test.

An Iowa bank, not a national bank with an Iowa chapter. Iowa law is not a small garnish on these exams. On the Property exam, 31 of 81 scored questions are Iowa-specific; on the Casualty exam, 33 of 83 are. Across both exams, 64 of 164 scored questions — 39% — test Iowa statutes, rules, and Iowa institutions: the Iowa FAIR Plan Association, the Standard Fire Policy, the Iowa Insurance Guaranty Association, the Iowa Automobile Insurance Plan, and Iowa’s cancellation and nonrenewal rules. Our Iowa bank holds 10,006 questions, and 2,512 of them test Iowa law specifically. That is the material national courses cover most lightly, and it is where this program is deepest.

An explanation on every question. Every one of the 10,006 questions explains why the correct answer is right and why the tempting alternatives are wrong, in plain language. The explanation is the lesson; the question is how you find out you need it.

Practice exams at the real exams’ weights. Each full practice exam is generated fresh for that attempt, weighted the way the official Iowa outlines weight the real thing — for Property, 50 general-knowledge questions against 31 Iowa-specific; for Casualty, 50 general against 33 Iowa-specific, with the sections inside each part weighted as Pearson VUE weights them. Questions you have not seen come first, and you never sit the same exam twice.

Drills that match how the exams are built. Drill a single outline section — Iowa laws common to all lines, homeowners and dwelling forms, workers’ compensation, Iowa auto rules — or sit a full timed simulation of either exam. Your results break down by outline section, so a weak area shows up in your practice data before it shows up on a score report. With two exams to pass, that breakdown also tells you which exam you are ready to book first.

Questions that stay honest. Every item in the program is monitored from real student responses. Questions students find suspiciously easy or suspiciously hard are pulled for review, and anything found wrong is fixed or retired — the bank you practice on is the bank as it should be, not as it shipped.

The real exams at a glance

Current as of October 2026, per the Pearson VUE Iowa Insurance Licensing Candidate Handbook (publication #121600, July 2025) and the Iowa Insurance Content Outlines (publication #121601, effective January 1, 2026). Full detail — eligibility, registration, fingerprinting, retakes, test day — is in our Iowa insurance exam guide.

  • Two exams means two of everything that matters: two reservations (or two bookings), two $44 fees — $88 in exam fees if you take both — two sittings, and two independent pass/fail results. Passing Property does not carry any part of Casualty.
  • Iowa requires no pre-licensing education for these licenses. The handbook’s licensing sequence is reserve, test, and apply — there is no course, classroom hours, or certificate standing between you and a reservation. Preparation is optional in Iowa; passing both exams is not.
  • About the passing score: the Iowa handbook states that the passing score is determined by the Iowa Insurance Division, and it does not publish a numeric cut score — candidates receive a score report marked pass or fail, and candidates who fail also receive a numeric score with diagnostic information for the general and Iowa portions. We do not print a passing percentage we cannot verify from an official source; plan to practice comfortably above any line, on both exams.
  • Both exams are offered at Pearson VUE test centers and online through OnVUE proctoring.
  • You apply for the license after passing: your results transfer to NIPR within a few business days, and your application must be completed within 90 days of passing or the exam must be retaken. Fingerprinting through Fieldprint follows your application — see the guide.

How the practice maps to the real exams

Every question in the Iowa bank is tagged to a section of Pearson VUE’s current Iowa content outlines — the same outlines both real exams are built from. Counts below are the bank itself, counted question by question. Because the two exams share the general-knowledge and Iowa-common material, the bank is organized by outline topic rather than by sitting; the generated-exam system assembles Property-only, Casualty-only, and combined practice exams from these same pools at the official weights.

For reference, the real exams weight those same topics as follows. Property: Types of Policies 22, Insurance Terms and Related Concepts 15, Policy Provisions and Contract Law 13, Iowa Common 25, Iowa Property 6. Casualty: Types of Policies, Bonds, and Related Terms 23, Insurance Terms and Related Concepts 15, Policy Provisions 12, Iowa Common 25, Iowa Casualty 8. Note what the weights say: the Iowa-common section alone is 25 scored questions on each exam — the single largest section on either test, and the same body of law counted twice if you take both.

How to use it

  1. Join the notify list today. When enrollment opens, start with the free sample exam — a fixed set of Iowa questions spanning both exams’ outlines, with full explanations — enough to see how the program teaches and where you stand.
  2. Drill the Iowa-common section first. It is 25 of 81 scored questions on Property and 25 of 83 on Casualty, it is identical law on both, and every hour spent on it pays off twice. The line-specific Iowa sections (FAIR Plan and fire policy on one side; assigned-risk auto and workers’ compensation rules on the other) come next.
  3. Drill by outline section. Work your weakest general-knowledge sections — policy types are the largest general block on both exams — until the misses stop repeating.
  4. Sit full generated exams for one sitting at a time. A Property simulation is 81 scored questions in 2 hours with pretest items mixed in; a Casualty simulation is 83 in 2 hours. Practice each exam the way you will actually take it, then use a combined run only as a final endurance check.
  5. Book each real exam through Pearson VUE when your practice scores for that exam sit comfortably above passing — the two exams can be booked independently, in whichever order your practice data supports — then apply through NIPR within 90 days of passing and complete the Fieldprint fingerprint step that follows your application.

Pricing

$29 — the full Iowa program, when enrollment opens. All 10,006 questions covering both the Property and the Casualty exams, every explanation, unlimited fresh practice exams and section drills. One purchase prepares you for both sittings; there is no second $29 for the second exam. If it isn’t for you, our refund policy gives you 14 days provided you have attempted less than 20% of the program (see the site Terms for the full policy).

For comparison, as of October 2026: WebCE’s practice-only Exam Tutor costs $39.95 with no published question count; Kaplan’s standalone InsurancePro QBank starts at $69; full pre-licensing courses from the national providers run $129 to $349 — in a state that does not require you to take one. This program is the practice itself, priced below every one of them. PassProfessor’s full insurance library holds 478,523 questions across all 50 states; Iowa’s program is the Iowa slice of that library, built on Iowa’s outlines.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the Iowa property and casualty exams?
There is no single combined exam. The Property exam shows 91 questions in 2 hours: 81 scored (50 general knowledge and 31 Iowa-specific) plus 10 unscored pretest questions mixed in. The Casualty exam shows 93 questions in 2 hours: 83 scored (50 general and 33 Iowa-specific) plus 10 pretest. Across both sittings you will answer 164 scored questions.

Does Iowa offer a combined P&C exam?
No. Iowa licenses property and casualty through two separate exams — Property (12-IA-03) and Casualty (12-IA-04) — each reserved, paid for, sat, and passed independently. Our program is one practice product covering both exams’ content, with generated practice exams available for each exam separately as well as combined; the combined practice run is a study tool, not a sitting Iowa offers.

What score do I need to pass the Iowa exams?
The passing score is determined by the Iowa Insurance Division. The current Pearson VUE Iowa handbook does not publish a numeric cut score; it states that candidates receive a score report marked pass or fail, and that candidates who fail also receive a numeric score and diagnostic information for both portions of the exam. Each exam has its own result — you must pass Property and Casualty separately.

Does Iowa require pre-licensing education?
No. Iowa sets no pre-licensing education requirement for the Property or Casualty producer licenses. The handbook’s process is to reserve the exam, pass it, and apply for the license. You may prepare however you choose — which makes the quality of your preparation the variable you control.

How much does it cost to get an Iowa P&C license?
Each exam costs $44, paid to Pearson VUE when you reserve — $88 for both exams. After you pass, the license application fee is $50, paid through NIPR (the producer license itself runs on a three-year term). Fingerprinting through Fieldprint after you apply costs $37.35 at an Iowa location ($39.35 outside Iowa), paid by the applicant. There is no state-required course fee, because Iowa requires no course — preparation, like this program at $29, is your choice.

Who administers the Iowa insurance exams?
Pearson VUE administers them for the Iowa Insurance Division. You reserve online through Pearson VUE’s Iowa insurance page or by phone at 877-540-5825, at least 24 hours ahead — walk-ins are not available — and you may test at a Pearson VUE test center or online through OnVUE proctoring.

What do I do after I pass?
Wait for your results to transfer to NIPR (the handbook says to allow 3–4 business days), then submit your license application through NIPR with the $50 fee — the application must be completed within 90 days of passing. After you apply, you will receive a confirmation containing a Fieldprint code; use it to schedule fingerprinting for the state and federal criminal history checks an initial resident producer license requires.

What happens if I fail one of the exams?
You retake only the exam you failed — the other exam’s pass stands on its own. Reservations for reexamination are not made at the test center, and you must wait 24 hours before making one; the $44 fee applies to each attempt. Your score report’s diagnostic information covers both the general and Iowa portions, and your practice data here breaks down by the same outline sections, so a retake plan can target the sections that cost you.

How long is my passing score good for?
Ninety days. Your license application must be completed within 90 days of passing the examination; if it is not, the examination must be retaken before you can apply.

Are these the actual exam questions?
No. Every PassProfessor question is written by us, from scratch, to Pearson VUE’s published Iowa content outlines and Iowa insurance law. We never use real exam questions, recalled questions, or another provider’s bank — and using actual exam content would violate the candidate rules you agree to when you test.

Does this program count as pre-licensing education?
Iowa requires no pre-licensing education for these licenses, and this program is exam preparation only — it provides no education credit in any state and is not a substitute for any state-required course. It exists to prepare you for the two exams themselves.

Why does the Iowa-law part get its own drills?
Because Iowa law is 64 of the 164 scored questions across the two exams — 39% of everything you will be scored on — and the 25-question Iowa-common section is the largest single section on each exam. Iowa tests its own institutions (the FAIR Plan Association, the Guaranty Association, the Automobile Insurance Plan) and its own rules (the Standard Fire Policy, cancellation and nonrenewal, uninsured-motorist law). Our bank holds 2,512 Iowa-law questions so those sections can be drilled on their own until they are the easiest part of both exams.

When can I enroll in the Iowa program?
The question bank is complete, and enrollment for this program opens as the catalog expands. Join the notify list on this page and we will email you when enrollment opens.
